Women’s Book Covers

I’m not saying there isn’t any good contents in these books. But I certainly wouldn’t think so from looking at these covers.

    Holy crap, this is hilarious!

Judging by those covers the word “woman” should always be preceded by “suburban white”.

  2. emily Says:

    That’s incredibly funny…

Pretty sure I have/have had at one time at least one of those.

I have never noticed that before.

  3. Allie Says:

Judging by those covers, the word “woman” is synonymous with pastel colors and seagulls.

Though I must say, I liked “Calm My Anxious Heart” ok.

So, I have a worse one for you:

http://tinyurl.com/2qd7×8 (made “tiny” since amazon urls are so long)

This book actually has some great principles in it, but the cover makes it look like only upper class southern women would want to read it. :) After having enjoyed the content I recommended it to a friend who ordered copies for herself and a few other women to study. I neglected to warn her about the cover and she just about flipped out when she saw it. Needless to say, they made book covers for it prior to the first study. :)

  5. Kirsten Says:

Hmm..somehow my tiny url didn’t work…Here’s the long one, hopefully it will still come out okay:

(If not, the gist of it is that it has a really old fashioned tea set on the front cover).

When I worked for Borders, I had many copies of “Captivating” that passed through my hands…and I never realized, until today, that there is a castle in the background. A castle. A hippie-chick and a castle. Hmm.

My favorite Christian book covers involve couples holding hands and walking down a beach. I’ve seen several of this variety. Point in case: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/1581341539.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V1056523645_.jpg

I find it astounding that so many book are written for women when everyone knows they can’t read. Do their husbands read it to them?

  8. Anonymous Says:

Yeah - you have to have a pretty strong stomache to browse the Christian Women’s section of book stores. I think that these authors are trying to relate to the emotional side of women through pink florals. They only thing they really accomplish is relating to my up-chuck reflex.

But, if the Christian Women’s section is nausea, the Christian Dating section is the valley of death.

  9. Ted Says:

Um, none of these even mention Rhett Butler!?

  10. Scarlet Says:

Kevin, it’s not that we can’t read, we can just only read if it’s written in flowy curling letters. So these books are perfect!

  11. Pat Says:

I know he has done some good thing, but I often wish that John Eldridge had never learned to read or write.
    That is all.

  12. Thom Says:

I just like that there is clearly a “Christian Woman Font”.

  13. JillBE Says:

There has to be some way to screen the crap out, why not this? I know which books won’t appeal to me, so I think this is perfect!

  14. Elena Says:

*pulls out Philosophy Professor hat and dons it* And we would be defining good when labeling contents, how?

    ;o)

And… is there a MeatyContent™ cover design set that I don’t know about?

Thom: Have ya seen the ChristianTeenagerFont™? It’s all rugged and jagged… or looks like a ransom note. ;o)

Not sure why other female commenters are seemingly put off by the pastels and the curvy fonts. I think some of those covers are actually good graphic design. Now… how much they are appealing to a stereotype? That’s another issue.

  15. Hillary Says:

You know, I have to agree… why is it that anything related to CHristian women has to be pink and flowery and all flouncy? I mean, some women are like that, but it kind of perpetuates this idea of how we are ’supposed’ to be… it irritates me to no end.

My personal fave though, is this one. Great novel. AWFUL cover. So much so that they’ve changed it to a solid colour (not even pink!) now. BUt I have the set of these. It’s like Fabio gone gladiator…

  16. Thom Says:

Hillary…it’s rather simple. Christian publishers all know Christian women fall into two categories. Conservative, quiet, sensitive and delicate flowers and those who aspire to be conservative, quiet, sensitive and delicate flowers. That is why they make all “Christian Woment” themed book covers “pink and flowery and all flouncy”.

My archetype of the ideal woman has always been the “cuddly amazon”; flowers on the outside but with a core of steel. These books look like they’re for hothouse orchids only.

As a guy, I’m feeling my testicles start to shrivel up and fall off from Estrogen Osmosis just LOOKING at those cover designs!
